Shab-e-Eid-ul-Fitr: Night of Rewards

The Excellence of "Lailat-ul-Jaiza" (Night of Rewards or Prize Giving Night)

The Excellence of "Lailat-ul-Jaiza" (Night of Rewards) - Shawwal ul Muqarram's Chand Raat, also known as "Shab-e-Eid-ul-Fitr" (the night before Eid prayers), has been designated as "Lailat-ul-Jaiza" (Night of Rewards).

In a Hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) referred to this night as Laylatul Jaazah (the night of prize-giving). Hence, this opportunity should be embraced fully to fulfill both material and spiritual needs.

There is no specific worship prescribed for the night before Eid. One may engage in any form of worship such as prayer, remembrance of Allah (zikr), supplication (dua), recitation of the Quran (tilawat), etc.

It was the practice of the Prophet Mohammed (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), to not sleep on the night preceding Eid-ul-Fitr. This night is mentioned in a Hadith as the Night of Reward (Lailatul Jaiza). Allah rewards those who have observed Ramadan fast, following the teachings of Islam. All the prayers on this night are accepted. Therefore, it is recommended to perform voluntary prayers on this night.

The Prophet Mohammed, Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, is reported to have said:

"Whoever stands (in worship) in the nights preceding the two Eids expecting rewards from his Lord, his heart will not die when the other hearts will die." (Ibn Majah)

To seize this opportunity, one should engage in abundant worship and fervently supplicate for all their needs and desires.

It is narrated in traditions that this night is one of the five nights wherein if someone stays awake in worship, they are guaranteed entry into Paradise.

5 Nights for entry in Paradise:

  • Eid ul-Fitr night (Chand Raat)

  • 15th night of Sha'ban (Shab-e-Baraat)

  • 8th night of Dhu al-Hijjah

  • 9th night of Dhu al-Hijjah

  • 10th night of Dhu al-Hijjah

This night is a night for Muslims to receive gifts (Eidi). But alas! Muslims lack awareness about this significant night. Instead of engaging in worship, people waste these precious moments in shopping. Some plan to indulge in sinful activities like watching movies, visiting gardens and malls, inviting themselves to the wrath of Allah. Let's be cautious lest all our deeds performed during Ramadan go to waste.

Try to spend this night, and other significant nights, performing the Isha and Fajr prayers in the congregation. For whoever does so will receive the reward of spending the whole night in worship.

Celebrations during Chaand Raat ( 'Night of the moon of Eid-ul-Fitr)

Chaand Raat, meaning 'Night of sighting the new moon' which marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal. It is a joyous occasion where families and friends come together in open spaces on the final day of Ramadan to see the new moon, heralding the arrival of Shawwal and Eid. Upon sighting the moon, greetings of Eid Mubarak ("Blessings of the Eid day") are exchanged. A cherished opportunity for reunions with friends and extended family, fostering bonds and creating lasting memories.

Ways to Maximize the Blessings of Lailat-ul-Jaiza

Here are some ways to maximize the blessings of this sacred night and attain countless rewards from Allah, as well as the acceptance of our good deeds and fasts throughout Ramadan, insha'Allah!

Recite the Qur’an and reflect on its meanings: Engage in reading and contemplating the Quran, as it fulfills an Islamic duty. Reflecting on its verses helps deepen our understanding and connection with Allah. (Quran 4:82)

Perform Ramadan Umrah in Last Ashra: The rewards for good deeds in Makkah and Madina are very high during Ramadan Umrah as every good deed is repaid for with 70000 good deeds, so grab this amazing opportunity to Max your sawab this last Ashra of Ramadan 2024.

Seek forgiveness for past and present sins: Strive to gain forgiveness for previous transgressions through sincere repentance (Syed-ul-Istighfar)

Perform Nafl (Supererogatory) prayers: Dedicate time to extra prayers such as Tahajjud, Salatul Tasbih and Kazaye Umri Namaaz. These voluntary prayers hold immense spiritual benefits and serve as a means of closeness to Allah.

Engage in Dhikrullah (Remembrance of Allah): Regularly recite phrases of remembrance, such as "Laa ilaaha illal-laahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu..." This practice not only earns great rewards but also protects one from the influence of Shaytaan throughout the day.

Make abundant dua (supplication): Take advantage of this auspicious night to pour out your heart in dua. Bibi Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) emphasized the importance of never giving up on supplication, as every dua is beneficial, whether it's answered immediately or stored for the Hereafter.

By actively engaging in these acts of worship and seeking closeness to Allah on this blessed night, we can hope for abundant rewards, the forgiveness of sins, and the acceptance of our prayers. May Allah accept our efforts and grant us His mercy and blessings.
